MACOMB - Illini West continued to cruise along, while Monmouth-Roseville also recorded a win in area high school football action Friday night.
ILLINI WEST 77, BEARDSTOWN 0
At Fuzz Berges Field in Carthage, the second-ranked hosts (Class 3A) put this one away early and often by exploding for 39 first quarter points to pummel the out-manned Tigers.
Junior quarterback Michael Lafferty threw all five of Illini West's touchdown passes in the opening quarter as he would finish the night completing 7-of-14 for 183 yards. The southpaw had scoring strikes of 33, 14, 16, 50, and one yard to four different receivers while adding another touchdown on the ground.
The Chargers also got touchdown runs from Drake Schmudlach, Mitch Beals, and Chris Corzatt along with a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by Seth Pilkington as Illini West led 69-0 at intermission.
Dillon Pollock added a 34-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring for the Chargers who improved to 8-0 for the season and 5-0 in the West Prairie Trail Southwest.
Illini West rolled up 377 yards of total offense while holding Beardstown to only 73.
MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE 20, SHERRARD 14
At Sherrard, the visiting Titans took a huge step toward a possible postseason berth by edging the Tigers in this Olympic Conference contest.
Bryan Utsinger scored twice in the second half for MRHS (5-3, 3-2), catching a TD pass from Cody Schreck and running for another score. Both plays covered 14 yards.
Sherrard (4-4, 2-3) out-gained the visitors, 317-253, including a 292-186 margin on the ground.
Schreck's three-yard run and Utsinger's PAT run got the Titans on the board in the second quarter, giving them an 8-6 lead.
Sherrard had five turnovers, including four lost fumbles.
Justin Miller had 35 carries for 180 yards and a TD for the Tigers.
The Titans can clinch a playoff spot with a win next week at Farmington.
CENTRAL/SOUTHEASTERN 20, WEST HANCOCK 13
At Central High School, the Panthers kept their playoff hopes alive with a WPT Southwest victory.
Jake Klingele recorded two TD runs in the third quarter before Derrick Hull added a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for CSE, who improved to 4-4 overall, 2-3 in league play.
Blake Lomax had a 5-yard touchdown run and a touchdown pass in the first half for West Hancock, which dropped to 3-5 overall, 2-3 in conference play.
The Panthers can become eligible for a playoff spot with a win next week at Beardstown.
PLEASANT PLAINS 20, SOUTH FULTON 13
At Pleasant Plains, the Rebels rallied from a 13-0 deficit before Plains scored in the final quarter to record a West Prairie Trail Southeast victory.
Plains (7-1, 5-1) scored twice in the first quarter on a pair of Steven Heredith runs, but South Fulton (5-3, 3-2) counted with rushing scores by Nick Shawgo and Tyler Perry that brought the Rebels even entering the final quarter. Julian Bell's four-yard score with just over nine minutes left proved to be the difference.
Perry finished with 112 yards rushing on 14 carries as the Rebels recorded 225 yards rushing and 271 yards of total offense.
Plains managed 240 yards of offense - 202 on the ground in 55 carries.
South Fulton needs a win against West Prairie next week to clinch a playoff spot.
HAVANA 62, WEST PRAIRIE 12
At Sciota, Havana's Ian Bridges accounted for six touchdowns as the visiting Ducks kept their playoff hopes alive.
Bridges rushed for four scores and had punt returns of 63 and 82 yards in the second half as Havana upped its record to 4-4 overall, 2-3 in WPT Southeast play.
Daniel Patterson rushed for 125 yards and two TDs for West Prairie (1-7, 1-4).
Havana led 14-0 after one quarter before scoring 41 of the next 47 points in building a 55-6 lead after three quarters. The Ducks out-gained the Cyclones 326-180.
PITTSFIELD/G-P 36, RUSHVILLE-INDUSTRY 14
At Rushville, the Rockets trailed just 14-7 at halftime before the visitors pulled away in the final 24 minutes.
The Saukees (7-1, 4-1) scored 20 unanswered points in the second half.
Alex McKelvey had 186 yards and two scores for RIHS (2-6, 1-5).
The Rockets host Pleasant Plains next week in its season finale.
