WIU upsets Bradley

PEORIA -

The Western Illinois University men's soccer team needed overtime, but it defeated No. 17/23 Bradley University 1-0 Friday night in front of nearly 1,100 fans at Shea Stadium.
Martin Browne, Jr. (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) found the back of the net off an assist from teammate Darryl Odom (Palmdale, Calif./Cloud City) in the 95th minute of the match to seal the upset the of the nationally-ranked Braves.
Both teams played strong defensive games to keep the match scoreless going into overtime.
Bradley (2-1-0) out shot WIU (3-0-0) 14-13, but the Leathernecks finished with four shots on-goal, compared to three for BU. Browne finished with three shots - two on goal that included the game-winner. Western finished with seven corner kicks and 14 fouls, while Bradley had just two corner kicks and 13 fouls.
Kooten Johnson and Nathan Sanchez each had two shots for WIU with Louis Oswald and Luke Greenwell recording shots on goal.
Leatherneck Stephen Paterson played a strong game in the net to keep the Braves from scoring. He finished with two saves - both coming in the first half - in recording the shutout.
BU keeper Drew Van Kampen had three second half saves. Packy Amundsen and Chris Cutshaw had three shots each for BU with Paul Tracy and Justin Bigelow tallying shots on goal.
The Leathernecks now travel to Indiana to face the Crusaders of Valparaiso. The match will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Eastgate Field.
